About the Event

Online Life Drawing for Adult Beginners - Learn the Basics & have Fun! (also suitable for improvers)

If you've ever wondered about Life Drawing and wanted to give it a go but just never knew how to even start OR if you used to draw, many moons ago, but have lost your confidence... Then we've got the workshop for you!

We LOVE Life Drawing at the HSA, we really believe it to be the bedrock of nearly ALL artistic practice - if you can draw a human, you can pretty much draw anything!  We also know how daunting it can seem - you may have seen our Unguided Life Drawing sessions, with all the incredible models we've been drawing, but couldn't join in beause you felt you didn't know how.  Well, we think it's time to give you the right tools!!

We've designed a spectacular workshop including:  a brilliantly inspiring 3 hour class that will set you off in very much the right direction. You'll be getting the benefit of one of the HSA's most experienced and enthusiastic Life Drawing tutors -  Jo Harris.  As if that wasn't enough, we're including a code (worth £10) which entitles you to come and join in on one of our glorious and hugley popular Online Unguided Life Drawing sessions, after you've found your feet with us.

Price £54.50, includes: A hugely fun, inspring and information-packed 3hr online group Life Drawing class, with an experienced, working Artist and Tutor AND a voucher to enjoy a free Online Unguided Life or Portrait Drawing session (worth £10)! Unfortunately we have to add the £2.50 to cover the payment & admin charges we incur with every sale - our apologies for this nuisance!

What to expect:

On the day, you'll log onto Zoom using the link that will be emailed to you. You'll then get to enjoy 3 whole hours of fantastic creative learning, online, with other Life Drawing participants, just like you. It's always a fun and relaxed atmosphere and a real feeling of all being in it together!

For the first half, Jo will give you a concise introduction on how to get to grips with the basics of drawing the body - how to plot it on the page, how to loosen up and how to render all the right shapes in proportion (and in relation to each other). You'll be viewing Jo's working example and then taking part in exercises designed to show the teaching in practice - you'll be drawing from a LIVE Life Model. Jo will do her best to demistify the art of drawing the figure and give you plenty of tips and tricks along the way from her vault of extensive life-drawing knowledge!

Then there will be a break where you can catch your breath, have a chat, (have a kitkat) before setting off on the second glorious part of this session, where we will be exploring the slightly more complicated features, such as face and hands.  As this is a short workshop, we won't be able to go into the face or hands in too much detail - but we'll certainly cover how to render these details convincingly within your overall drawing.  In the last part of the session we will be having a practice putting together everything that's been discussed during the morning.

What will you need?

We would like to encourage you to work with nice fluid drawing movements which is much easier to do on a larger scale. Please could you equip yourself with some large sheets of cartridge paper, or preferably a sketchbook of size A4 or above - this needn't be expensive and can be bought from most online Art Suppliers (click on the links below for their website).

A charcoal pencil (or two)

Some pieces of soft willow charcoal

A paper stump/tortillion (if you don't have one of these a cotton bud or bunched up kitchen towel could work instead).

A 2b pencil

A pencil sharpener

A regular rubber

A putty rubber

Some paper towel/a rag

Please note, if you're using loose sheets of paper, you'll need a drawing board - this can be the back of a tray, a large piece of strong cardboard or anything hard you can lean your sheet of paper on.

When: Saturday 20th April, 10am start (UK time)

Duration: 3 hours

Designed for adults - suitable for 16-18 at the parent's discretion. If you have a teen working towards Art A-levels or Portfolio then this would be a great introduction for them also. Please contact us if you are booking for someone in this position.

If you have to miss this session:

PLEASE NOTE:

Due to an extremely small admin team (of 1), the time it takes up and the financial difficulty it causes the HSA (we are charged a percentage for each transaction received AND refunded), we are unable to offer refunds or replacements for orders made in error or a changed mind. Please make sure you check the date BEFORE placing the order.

We are unable to offer refunds or replacements for forgotten/missed sessions which are the responsibility of the purchaser.  We will run a session only if we know we have a certain amount of students - if you change your mind or forget that can throw the session for not only the tutor/model, but also for all the other people who have paid to attend - it also creates a lot of admin and stress for the organiser.

In the extremely rare case where a refund is issued there will be a 25% service charge taken for our time and the payment/booking charges we have incurred.

IF IT'S OUR FAULT:

If you're unable to attend the session through a mishap/error on our part, we will make sure you are provided with a link to the recording (if one is made) that will be uploaded to our website after the session has run - or a voucher to attend any forthcoming sessions of the same type - alternatively we will issue a refund - please let us know if that's the case.

Please understand, we have to put these terms and conditions in place to safeguard our business, we make no profit from it - the income from the events is used to pay all charges for Zoom/payment services/website/web-hosting/newsletter services/bank charges etc. (which all really adds up) also for our brilliant tutors, models & photographers and of course to pay the salaries of the hard working folk behind the scenes who put all our workshops and events on.
