A Taster Day: Drypoint Etching Workshop with Liam Biswell
Sunday 23rd August
10am - 4pm
This is a day workshop exploring the various techniques that surround the Drypoint Etching process. Experience printing with the etching presses to create your own unique prints.
Printing onto both fabric and paper we will spend the day exploring the very popular drypoint etching process. We will look into various collage techniques and explore colour and texture to produce experimental and high quality finished prints through the etching presses.
We will begin the workshop by choosing relevant reference material from which we will be working from, you are encouraged to bring along your own drawings/sketches/photos/magazine pull outs. We will then talk through the etching plate, press and tools. You will etch your design onto an etching plate using various tools.
After etching our plate we will begin the printing using quality Caligo inks onto mould made papers.
During this workshop you will learn:
How to use etching tools to create your image on an etching plate.
Learn the chine colle technique.
How you can express your own style through mark making, use of
texture, colour choice and composition. Create prints working from your own imagery – this could be drawings / photographs / magazine cut outs / print outs / sketch books. I will have imagery for you to work from, however it would be great if you could bring along a selection of the above to work from.
Beginners very welcome, I will offer step by step guidance throughout the session with visual presentation and demonstrations. This will be a very experimental and hands on workshop that will set you up to
continue your exploration of Etching and hopefully other methods of printmaking.

All of our glorious tutors are self-employed which means that if a student cancels and we are unable to fill the space, this leaves our tutor in the lurch – missing out on one student’s fees can have a big impact on a tutor’s income. Please be considerate. We ask that you make extra sure that you are able to make the dates of this course before booking as we regret, we are unable to offer refunds. We reserve the right to cancel a class in unusual circumstances. We try to avoid this wherever possible, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. In this situation, of course, a full refund will be given. We're sorry but the Henley School of Art can not be financially responsible for extreme weather conditions or any other situations that are out of our control.
