Portrait Painting in Oils: a 10 week Course With Sue Tilbury

A 10 week guided course on Portrait Painting in oils working from both photographs and models. 

 

The course is designed for beginners & intermediate levels or simply as a kickstart for artists who want to try a new discipline or medium or for those who'd like to dip a toe into the water of portraiture...  

 

Over the 10 weeks, we will be exploring through drawing basics, composition, tone, colour mixing and application of paint. 

 

Be prepared to be hooked!

 

Materials List for Portrait Painting Course

 

(We probably won’t need paints for the first session)

 

It’s nice to have your own paints etc as it’s a 10 week course.  I can supply them for you to use on occasion at a small charge of £5 per session. I will also have a small selection of things to buy as well.

 

Easels are supplied.

 

The basics you will need are as follows

 

Oil paint:

Titanium white

Cadmium yellow

Ultramarine blue

Cadmium red

These can be bought in sets which work out cheaper and they are often on offer online.

Daler Rowney Georgian oil colour do sets.

 

Brushes: - Golden taklon brushes or equivalent. Synthetic flat in small, medium & large and also a couple of small, medium rounded synthetic brushes.

Canvas paper (bought in tear off pads see below)

or canvas board

E.g W&N canvas board 10” x 12” or bigger

Daler Rowney Georgian oil painting paper 14” x 10” thereabouts.

Medium - liquin

Palette knife (not plastic)

 palettes - sold at all art stores

E.g Daler Rowney tear off palette for oils & acrylics

Baby wipes - Waitrose essential or equivalent

Good online suppliers are Jackson’s and Cass art.

Hobbycraft, The Range in Reading and also The Works sell a few art materials.

 

If you bring your own brushes you will need W&N Sansodor or Zest It which are both odorless mineral spirit used for cleaning brushes and thinning oil paint. 

 

NB - under NO circumstances ordinary white spirit will be allowed in the studio because of the fumes. Also there are no facilities for disposing of used mineral spirit so it needs to be taken away with you.
