About the Event

An Introduction to Watercolour, a 6 week morning Course With Kevin Scully

AUTUMN TERM

2nd November - 7th December

Tuesday Mornings: 10.30pm - 12.45pm

A wonderul, welcoming course for those new to Watercolour painting, as well as those who may not have dabbled in the medium for a while.

This practical, beginner’s guide will give you a sound foundation in the way in which the medium can be used.

You’ll learn about colour mixing and paint application, as well as advice on the best materials to use in helping you produce the most satisfactory results. You will also be shown ways in which you can avoid some of the pitfalls associated with the medium.

You’ll be able to practice some basic techniques and learn how to produce some exciting effects particular to watercolour. There will be practical demonstrations throughout each session, and plenty of one-to-one tuition. At the end of the course, you’ll be armed with enough experience and confidence to produce your own paintings.

There are no rules in watercolour painting, just better ways of doing things!

Watercolour Materials List

Paints

Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolours are perfectly adequate for those starting out in watercolour painting but if you want to spend a bit more money, I suggest you buy the best quality paints that you can afford and preferably in small tubes.

Among the best 'Artists Quality' paints are those made by Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Daniel Smith, and Jackson's.

These are the colours I tend to use, but anything similar will be fine:

· Cadmium Yellow Light

· Cadmium Yellow Deep (orange)

· Cadmium Red

· Permanent Rose or Magenta

· Cobalt Blue

· Ultramarine

· Cerulean Blue

· Hooker's Green

· Perylene Green

· Viridian or Phthalo Green

· Dioxazine Violet

· Raw Sienna

· Burnt Sienna

· Raw Umber

· Payne's Grey

Paper

Good quality watercolour paper - at least 140lb, NOT surface - Saunders Waterford, Bockingford, Arches, Fabriano, Daler Rowney, etc. This can be in a pad, a block, or loose sheets. Any size similar to A3 or thereabouts is adequate.

Brushes

Watercolour brushes in a variety of sizes including a large, flat brush for washes, and a square 1/2" or 3/4" brush. Sable brushes are excellent but expensive, so good quality synthetic brushes are fine.

Other materials

Large watercolour palette - plastic or metal

An HB pencil and sharpener

Putty rubber

Masking tape

A small atomiser bottle

A small tube of white gouache

A ruler

Kitchen towel or tissues

This is a fairly comprehensive list, but it doesn't matter if you don't have everything, as there will be some materials available to borrow.

Reference material will be provided, but you may also bring along any images you wish to work from.

Age 18+ (no exceptions)

PLACES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE & NON-TRANSFERABLE - if your plans change, please don't ask us to refund/transfer your place (have a look at our t's & c's below for more info).

COVID PRECAUTIONS: We ask that you please  wash/sanitise your hands regularly throughout the sessions - the wearing of masks is not required, but it is preferred. The studio space is vigorously cleaned before & after all sessions during this time.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do get in touch with us: studio@thehenleyschoolofart.com

If you are feeling unwell, we ask that you please don't risk the health of others, please refrain from coming to the studio (no matter HOW much you want to draw).

We hate being this strict - but we'd hate anyone to come to any harm and we'd also hate to have to close the school again!
