About the Event

Oil Painting, learn to paint Florals with Robin Danely

Sunday 20th February 2022

10.30am - 4.30pm

In this one-day workshop, you will learn how to create expressive paintings of flowers in oil paint, for beginner to intermediate artists.

We will cover basic colour theory, paint mixing and application, useful composition tips, and will concentrate on the use of value to render our subject in a realistic and dynamic way. Experience helpful but not in any way required!

You will need to provide your own materials - we decided that it would make the Workshop prohibitively expensive if we bought all the kit that you would need.  The good news is that in buying everything yourself, you will have the tools you'll need to carry on gloriously painting, with all your new found knowledge, at home!

Suggested materials:

2-4 surfaces to paint on: can be canvas, canvas board, wooden board, paper, etc. I like paper because it’s inexpensive and light, but often needs to be primed with gesso first (unless it’s specifically oil painting paper).

20 x 25 cm or A4 or similar is ideal.

Please be aware that you will have to transport wet paintings home at the end of the day — I will show you how to pack them up and will bring some extra materials for this purpose.

Brushes: 5-6 brushes in varying sizes, ideally medium/smaller sizes like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Synthetic or synthetic blend are fine, or natural bristles if you prefer. I like flats, but filberts and brights are good, too. Rounds are not as versatile, I’ve found.

A palette: can be wood, glass, plexiglass, or disposable pad. I’m averse to paying money for a palette, when you can easily use a piece of plexiglass, glass, or masonite board primed with gesso.

A palette knife: I like a 5-8cm blade, but it’s up to you! (I have a handful of extras which I will bring along)
