Online Portrait and Caputuring Character for Adult Beginners - Learn the Basics & have Fun! (also suitable for improvers)

Important Notice

In case you haven't heard by now, very sadly one of the tutors you were due to have teaching you (Holly Surplice) has just had to have an emergency spinal operation.

The good news is that she's fine, but I'm afraid she won't be teaching on Saturday.  Do not despair - you'll still have founder of the School: Jo Harris guiding you, with over 25 years Life Drawing experience under her belt and who has been teaching portraiture for the last 7 years - you're in very good hands!

If you've always wondered how on earth to draw a face, how to get the nose to look like a nose or how to draw hair but just never knew how to even start? Then we're the girls for you!

We love Life Drawing at the HSA, we really believe it to be the bedrock of nearly ALL artistic practice - if you can draw a human, you can pretty much draw anything!  We also know how daunting it can seem, particularly faces! You may have seen our Unguided Life Drawing sessions, with all the incredible models we've been drawing, but couldn't join in because you didn't know how.  Well, we think it's time to give you the right tools!!

We've put our heads together and designed a spectacular workshop including:  a brilliantly inspiring 3 hour class that will set you off in very much the right direction. You'll be getting the benefit of 2 of the HSA's experienced and enthusiastic Life Drawing tutors -  Jo Harris & Holly Surplice. Both tutors have their own differing strengths which compliment each other brilliantly and you'll be getting the benefit of this fantastic, creative ying and yang. The class has been put together so that in the first half you'll be getting a crash course in all the juicy tips, tricks and know-how of getting the face down on the page confidently.  This will be followed by the second half, filled with colour, capturing character and artistic freedom!

Price £35, includes: A hugely fun, inspring and information-packed 3hr online group Portrait Class, with TWO experienced, working artists and tutors AND a voucher to enjoy a free Online Unguided Portrait session (worth £10)!

What to expect:

On the day, you'll log onto Zoom using the link that will be emailed to you. You'll then get to enjoy two and a half whole hours of fantastic creative learning, online, with other Life Drawing newbies, just like you. It's always a fun and relaxed atmosphere and a real feeling of all being in it together!

For the first hour, Jo will give you a concise introduction on how to get to grips with the basics of drawing the face - how to plot it on the page, how to loosen up and how to render all the right shapes in proportion. You'll be viewing Jo's working example and then drawing from a LIVE  female Life Model (in this case, the INCREDIBLE Trixie Divine). Jo will do her best to demistify the art of drawing the facial features and give you plenty of tips and tricks along the way from her vault of extensive life-drawing knowledge!

Then there will be a break where you can catch your breath, have a chat, (have a kitkat) before setting off on the second glorious part of this session, where Holly will re-energise you with a different take on drawing the face, observing character, expression and using colour! In this section of the class, you'll get a chance to break out of the confines of convention and have a look at how to use different materials to make interesting and descriptive marks on the page.  This half is all about fun, exploration and using your instincts to draw the model!

What else will you need?

We would like to encourage you to work with nice fluid drawing movements which is much easier to do on a larger scale. Please could you equip yourself with some large sheets of cartridge paper, or preferably a sketchbook of size A3 or above - this needn't be expensive and can be bought from most online Art Suppliers (click on the links below for their website):

Jacksons

Cass Arts

Amazon

Please note, if you're using loose sheets of A3, you'll need a drawing board - this can be the back of a tray, a large piece of strong cardboard or anything hard you can lean your A3 sheet of paper on.

When: Sat 6th March 2021, 2pm start (UK time)

Duration: 3 hours

Designed for adults - suitable for 14+. If you have a teen working towards Art A-levels or Portfolio then this would be a great introduction for them also. Please contact us if you are booking for someone in this position.
