Online Portrait and Caputuring Character for Adult Beginners - Learn the Basics & have Fun! (also suitable for improvers)
If you've always wondered how on earth to draw a face, how to get the nose to look like a nose or how to draw hair but just never knew how to even start? Then this is the workshop for you!Â
We love Life Drawing at the HSA, we really believe it to be the bedrock of nearly ALL artistic practice - if you can draw a human, you can pretty much draw anything! Â We also know how daunting it can seem, particularly faces! You may have seen our Unguided Life Drawing sessions, with all the incredible models we've been drawing, but couldn't join in because you didn't know how. Â Well, we think it's time to give you the right tools!!
We've designed a spectacular workshop including:  a brilliantly inspiring 3 hour class that will set you off in very much the right direction. You'll be taught by Life Drawing tutor Jo Harris, founder of the Art School, with over 25 years Life Drawing experience. We'll be starting with the basic shapes, how to plot the face out, training the eye to see things as they really are (not how we imagine them to be) and how to avoid all the usual pitfalls. Then we'll be moving on to the subtleties of shading, using different materials and how to draw the more complicated features. We'll be looking at how to achieve a short pose face as well as a longer portrait pose - it's going to be a lot of fun and VERY informative!
BUT WAIT...
...THERE'S MORE!
Each participant will get a voucher code which gives them free access to one of our amazing online, Unguided Life Drawing sessions (of their choosing) as part of the package!
Price £35, includes: A hugely fun, inspring and information-packed 3hr online group Portrait Class, with an experienced, working artist and tutors AND a voucher to enjoy a free Online Unguided Portrait session (worth £10)!
What to expect:
On the day, you'll log onto Zoom using the link that will be emailed to you. You'll then get to enjoy two and a half whole hours of fantastic creative learning, online, with other Life Drawing newbies, just like you. It's always a fun and relaxed atmosphere and a real feeling of all being in it together!
For the first half of the session, Jo will give you a concise introduction on how to get to grips with the basics of drawing the face - how to plot it on the page, how to loosen up and how to render all the right shapes in proportion. You'll be viewing Jo's working example and then drawing from a  Life Model. Jo will do her best to demistify the art of drawing the facial features and give you plenty of tips and tricks along the way from her vault of extensive life-drawing knowledge!
Then there will be a break where you can catch your breath, have a chat, (have a kitkat) before setting off on the second glorious part of this session, where we'll be looking more closely at the features of the face, how to draw hair and try to capture the character of our model.
What else will you need?
To draw with please have the following:
2B pencil
Sharpener
Eraser
Tortillion (paper smudger) or kitchen towel
Willow charcoal (not essential)
Charcoal pencil (not essential)
We would like to encourage you to work with nice fluid drawing movements, which is much easier to do on a larger scale.
Please could you equip yourself with a sketchbook of size A4 or A3 (no smaller) or some large sheets of white cartridge paper- this needn't be expensive and can be bought from most online Art Suppliers (click on the links below for their website):
Please note, if you're using loose sheets of A3, you'll need a drawing board - this can be the back of a tray, a large piece of strong cardboard or anything hard you can lean your A3 sheet of paper on. Â
When: Sat 18th September 2021, 2pm start (UK time)
Duration: 3 hours
Designed for adults - suitable for 14+. If you have a teen working towards Art A-levels or Portfolio then this would be a great introduction for them also. Please contact us if you are booking for someone in this position.
